Funny Jungle

Topps and the BAMM judges were delighted with the high standard of entry in the first year of the competition, 2008. “Wow, these entries are amazing. You must be delighted with the high standard and level of creativity. It’s real proof of what you say about all the young talent out there. We are really proud to be associated with bringing it (and childrens’ mosaics) into the limelight” - Viv Johns, Topps Tiles

BAMM, www.bamm.org.uk, hope that schools will be encouraged by the fabulous mosaics entered in 2008 to enter the 2009 competition. If you feel inspired to enter but have not yet made a mosaic with your school please read the articles posted by mosaic artists, with hints and tips on the process of mosaic making with children, on the BAMM site under EDUCATION and also on the Education pages of this site. Topps Tiles have been involved on the community promoting mosaic for many years and some of the projects supported by them can be viewed on the Community page.

This mosaic project was submitted to Mega Mosaic Makers 2008.

Description

SECOND PRIZE - This mosaic was created by children aged 4 to 6 from Hiltingbury Infants School, in Chandlers Ford. It is a huge 12 square metres mosaic which took over 5 months to make.

The children were working in small groups of 3 or 4 and we used vitreous tiles, glass gems and their favourite: colourful mirrors which are very shiny. They decided on a theme, which was animals in the jungle, and using over 100 drawings, I created this mural, trying to include everybody’s creation in it.

We had a fantastic Opening day: our Mayor came to cut the ribbon and even the Hampshire News dedicated us their front page. But the best thing for me was seeing the children’s expression of delight and pride about their beautiful work of art.
