Description

The mosaic was created during an after school activity during the Summer term. The session last 40 minutes and took 9 weeks to complete. The pupils also created their own small mosaic pictures using the same methods.

The group of 10 pupils ranging from 7-11 year olds chose to do this activity because they were interested in learning how to do mosaic. They all had ideas about what the mosaic panel should be and they finally decided upon the idea of a large tree with other nature items within the picture as we are an Eco school Green flag holder and the pupils love nature. The picture was sketched by a year 6 pupil and the colours were selected from the tiles we had which were donated leftovers from parents’ kitchens. This meant that the beautiful end product was made from tiles that would have been thrown away to landfill sites so reduce, reuse and recycle was part of our plan.

Some of the thicker tiles were put into an old pillow case with a thick piece of fabric over the top. The pupils then took turns to hit the tiles with a hammer so that smaller, more useful pieces could be used. Other tiles were cut from the original square by older pupils. They wore safety equipment and they were supervised using the tile cutter and tile nippers. The glass beads were put onto the tree and they certainly catch the light.

The final mosaic is on a wall in quite a dark corridor and all pupils (age 3-11) pass it every day. The corridor is now a lot brighter.

The after school activity group, and their teacher, were very proud as this project was not sponsored and did not receive professional help.
