This project was carried out during the school’s annual book week, the theme for which was fitness. The design was created by the artist after discussion with teachers. Year 4 and 5 children worked on the project under the supervision of the artist, in rotating groups of 5 or 6 over a four day period. A small group of students then grouted the finished mosaic on day 5.

Most of the mosaic is unglazed white ceramic tile – much safer and easier for the kids to nip. Vitreous glass was used for the bold colours with white aqaurium pebbles filling the olympic rings and some millefiore here and there.

Waffle boards were used to create the lettering and drop shaddow effect. This allowed less dexterous pupils to work away from the main mosaic to create their individual letter.
