Our project was commissioned by Birmingham City Council’s extended learning project and focused specifically on involving newly arrived children and parents in the Sparkhill area of Birmingham. The incentive was to encourage confidence in these families settling into a new community, while learning both new creative and english language skills.

About 20 children and 5 parents were involved integrally in the process of creating mosaic. Artist Claire L Cotterill, worked with group to design the mosaic around the theme of tranformation and aspiration, maintaining the integrity of childrens initial designs in the finished mosaic. Following design element, Claire produced a mosaic ‘cartoon’ which the whole group then completed using the indirect method during production workshops. The Mosaic was then installed at Ladypool School creating a cheerful welcome panel on an exterior wall in the school’s main entrance. the work took place over several months.
