This 1m by 1m mosaic was created and inspired by this year’s celebrations of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics. The children drew different designs on this theme and the most popular elements of design such as the Olympic flame, the flags, children waving the flags, flowers, the golden carriage, and the Queen were merged together to form the final design to include as many elements as possible that the children wanted in thier mosaic and to represent what the children had seen on TV, seeing the flame coming though the streets and school projects and activities they had taken part in. ‘The Queen bee’ in the centre is the schools’ logo and inspires the children to work hard / represents the schools’ ethos.

The whole school of around 300 excited people stuck tiles onto the mosaic, children from Reception year upwards chose where they wanted to stick their tiles in the sky and the older children who stuck the smaller complicated parts of the flag, flowers, wheels of the golden carriage. The children ranged in age from 4 – 7 years old. Teaching assistants, teachers, lunchtime supervisors, the caretaker, the receptionists, the head-teacher, and the cleaners also stuck on their invividual tile/s so everyone participated in this pupil focused task. Some of the children also said, they were going to make thier own mosaics from magazines at home inspired by this one!

The location of the project was in the music room and took 3 days to stick and another day for grouting. The mosaic is now mounted in the playground to brighten the area and for the children to see their work, including the flame and the golden carriage glittering when the sun shines!
