Description

Battlefield Primary marked an important milestone this year as it celebrated 100 years in the southside community.

The school reached it’s centenary on Sunday 3rd September 2012 and had a jam packed week of events planned for both pupils and Battlefield resident to commemorate this historic year.

All staff and pupils are enjoying the centenary celebrations as they continue with the production of a whole school mosaic and tapestry which will become permanent reminders of this historic year. The mosaic also displays the centenary logo designed by a pupil, the mosaic will be a long lasting feature and memory for Battlefield pupils. Organised and implemented by a P2 parent all 350 pupils were able to help to create the fabulous mosaic. More information can be found at the Battlefield Primary Centenary Facebook Page.

We’ve been working on the project since September this year, working a few hours a week for probably a total of 40 hours.

On Tuesday the 4th and Wednesday the 5th of September it was the turn of the teachers to get involved as each member of staff wore a 1912 costume which had been provided by McMillan Costume Hire in Edinburgh. Teaching reverted to old teaching styles with all pupils lining up formally in boy girl lines, using slates in class to complete handwriting and sums and taking part in drills in PE lessons. The children thoroughly enjoyed experiencing what a pupil long ago would have experienced each day. Many pupils dressed in 1912 or Victorian style costumes in keeping with the celebrations. There were also class costumes in each class for pupils to try on.

The activities were funded by a generous grant by the Heritage Lottery Fun of £5000. On Monday the 3rd of September the celebrations got on their way with a special centenary birthday party. All pupils and staff were in the main hall with some specially invited guests. The school’s birthday cake was decorated with the centenary logo which was designed by Primary 5 pupil Ilona Bladworth, who won a competition with her colourful logo last year. The oldest and youngest pupil from the school blew out 100 candles on the centenary cake as the whole school sang happy birthday. Pupils went back to classrooms for party games and food while guests remained in the hall for a buffet and birthday cake.

Battlefield Primary opened in 1912 with 758 pupils enrolled and 673 turning up! This year, all 350 pupils have been investigating the school’s history, from a fire gutting the primary building in the 1960s to the Queen visiting Hampden in 1977 for the silver jubilee.
