Description
Michelle was commissioned to work with the key stage two children to make a series of three colourful mosaics, to be placed opposite the reception desk in the school entrance. The teachers wanted a project that would combine photography, ICT and art.
Firstly the children took photographs in the beautiful gardens that surround the school. The children then enhanced the colours of their photographs on the computer and these were then pixilated. Michelle chose the three images that she felt would make the best mosaics and enabled the children to recreate them exactly as possible on three one metre square boards. The boards were drawn out into 16 equal squares, two children working on each square. Each pair had a printout of their area and had to match the colours one line at a time. About 40 different shades of glass tesserae were arranged around the room, in colour groups, for the children to choose from. It was very exciting watching the pictures gradually emerge over the two and a half days the children worked on them.
Michelle took the completed mosaics to her workshop to grout and prepare them for hanging. They have recently been made and not yet placed in the school, but that will hopefully be happening by the beginning of December. All the children in year 4, 5 & 6 worked on these mosaics.
